Abstract

Multi-award winning journalist with a 60-year career, Ricardo Kotscho oversees his professional career in the master class that opened the 2024 academic year of the Journalism course at the University of São Paulo (USP). In a speech addressed to students, transcribed here in adapted form, he defends the utopian character of journalism (“never stop dreaming, but with both feet on the ground”), its primary function of informing, (“eyes and ears wide open to tell the stories of our time”), the social commitment to inform honestly and the public utility character of the profession (“we don’t change the world, but we can help publicize good examples of a more just, supportive and fraternal way of life, denouncing the who is wrong and praising those who deserve it”).
